East Kilbride Gymnastics Club was established in 1972 by Foster McLean, with just 50 gymnasts and four Council employed coaches. The numbers of gymnasts at the club slowly rose over the next few years but the council withdrew their own paid coaches. For many years the gymnasts were coached by volunteer coaches who willingly gave up their time to offer the gymnasts the best tuition they could give.
The gymnast numbers rose very quickly around the time the club moved into the Dollan Baths, partly as a response to the performances being witnessed at the 1976 Olympic Games.
After losing the use of the Dollan Baths, the club moved around various sports centres before settling at the Greenhills Sports Centre. The club had sole use of this facitlity with some of the best equipment of any gymnastics club in Scotland. We stayed in Greenhills until 2019 when we moved o the current location in Colvilles Place. This was an exciting period in the club's history when we moved to premises three times as large as the Greenhills gym. This made us one of the largest clubs in Scotland with some of the best gymnastics equipment that money can buy. A fantastic opportunity for both gymnasts and coaches.
The club is very proud of the gymnasts that have brought acclaim and success to the club. In recent years Yvonne Welsh and Kelly Anne Anderson became the first ever Scottish Sports Acrobats to achieve any medal at the Junior World Acro Championships, leaving the competition with a bronze medal. More recently several of our Acro gymnasts were selected to compete in the Scotland team for the Celtic Cups and Home Nations Tournaments held in the last few years. They helped Scotland to successfully win the Celtic Cup and Home Nations Trophies each time, for which we are very proud.
We have several Scottish and British Champions in Acro and Tumble over the last few years.
The club is now a registered charity and is overseen by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.
The club worked towards, and was successful in attaining Gymmark certification. Gymmark is accreditation from our governing body, Scottish Gymnastics, that EKGC is a safe, effective and child friendly club.
